THE LEARNING CENTRE
Assynt Leisure Learning Centre targets all aspects of adult learning (16s and over), but prioritizes those with the greatest need. The purpose of the learning centre is to increase the local opportunities for education and training.

Free Careers advice provided by Careers-Scotland
Free interview advice and CV writing workshops
Beginner computer courses, one to one or in groups
Online courses in four business sectors: Food and drink, Tourism, Financial services and Construction.
Online courses in computing and life-skills.
Confidential referrals to other agencies for personal mentoring and lifestyle advice.
Training for Work: Emergency First Aid, Elementary Food Hygiene, Child Protection etc.

European Computer Driving Licence Courses. Train for the benchmark in computer administration. This comprises seven Modules in two parts: British Computer Society Qualification level 1 [Basic Concepts, File Management and Internet] and British Computer Society Level 2 [Microsoft applications: Word, Excel (Spreadsheets), Access (Database) and PowerPoint (Presentations)]

UHI ACCESS
How would you like to study for a degree in Lochinver? The University of the Highlands and Islands are offering distance degrees relevant to our own local needs, through local learning centres. Don’t worry if you think you are lacking qualifications to start a degree. UHI offer several access courses to help you get a start. Please pop down to browse the leaflets or phone to make an appointment with Jane, who can tell you what degrees or other courses are on offer. Funding is also available, especially if you have not already used up your SAAS allocation. Up to £500 is available per year from your ILA if you are a mature student. Come down and have a look at the red (students with dependant children), green and blue “Helping you meet the costs of learning” booklets.

In 2006 Assynt Leisure Centre was officially granted status as a branded Learndirect Scotland learning centre, giving it access to at least 500 on-line courses. In May 2009, the centre was granted ILA Provider Status, which allows students to spend their ILA allocation in Lochinver.
It is part of the Sutherland Learning Network which includes Lairg Learning Centre, North-west Training Centre and Brora Learning Centre.

Where is the Assynt Learning Centre?
The main base of Assynt Learning Centre is within the Leisure Centre but it also uses other venues for courses within Lochinver and other locations in Assynt. The computer suite is equipped to take a class of up to 12 students, as well as being available at any time for individual study.

REFERENCE LIBRARY
Apart from an extensive range of learning leaflets, this also has useful texts for popular subjects e.g. Wildlife and gardening, Adult Basic Education and examples of school text-books to assist with homework exercises.
MULTI-PURPOSE ROOM
Equipped with projection screen, flipchart, overhead projection, tables, coffee-making facilities, hot water etc., this room is available for training and teaching/learning purposes. It is used for informal community education classes in languages, crafts, geology, local wildlife workshops and training for work.
